Kansas and Missouri students compete in U.S. DOE Science Bowl

Kansas City, MO– As it celebrates its 75^th anniversary, the Kansas City National Security Campus continues its tradition of encouraging students in the community to engage in STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Manufacturing) by once again sponsoring the 35^th annual Kansas and Missouri Science Bowl. The competition – taking place March 1-2 --  will feature high school and middle school students representing 11 schools competing for a spot at the National Science Bowl in Washington D.C. in April.

“Building back numbers of participants hasn’t been easy post-covid. However, we are thrilled to see two new schools – Shawnee Mission South and Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science – joining the event this year,” said Amanda Hill, Science bowl Co-coordinator and KCNSC community relations specialist.

The Kansas middle school competition will begin March 1 at 1:00pm at University of Missouri – Kansas City (UMKC).  Teams of four students will compete in a fast-paced question and answer competition with questions across every discipline of science. The winners of the qualifying rounds will meet in a final head-to-head match to determine the 2024 Regional Champion. The Kansas and Missouri high school competitions will begin March 2 at 9:15am at UMKC using the same format.

Each year more than 15,000 students across the nation compete for the opportunity to represent their school at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl, the largest and most prestigious science competition in the country. The top 12 national teams will receive cash prizes for their school’s math and science departments, as well as bragging rights for the following year. 

Sponsors of the 2024 Kansas and Missouri Science Bowl include the U.S. Department of Energy and the Kansas City National Security Campus, which is managed by Honeywell FM&T. 

“The Department of Energy’s Science Bowl brings the most remarkable and brightest students together for an intense competition in a wide range of science disciplines,” said Anne Einig, KCNSC’s Community Relations Manager.  “This long-standing competition furthers our mission to support STEMM (Science Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Manufacturing) education in our communities though grants, employee mentors and volunteers.
